In his Three Principles of the People, published in 1924, he listed a range of territories that had been ‘lost’ to China which included Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Mongolia, Burma, the Ili Basin, unspecified territories to the north of the Heilongjiang (or Amur River), the Ryukyu Islands, Bhutan and Nepal. Tributary relations were seen as the equivalent of colonies. In all cases they were said to have been lost as a result of foreign encroachments aided and abetted by Chinese or local traitors. Clearly, the claims to these territories were based not only on the rights to succession to the Qing as the rulers of a sovereign state called China, but also on the claim that the international agreements underpinning their loss were ‘unequal’ and therefore invalid.
