The third question that I shall briefly address is how far a critical conception of practical reason differs from a discursive conception. Once again, I shall not refer to texts, but rather to tendencies. In so far as a discursive conception of reason is anchored in actual discursive practice, it amounts to a form of norm-based reasoning.

If autonomy is identified with independence, and the link between acts and states of agents is regarded as conceptual, we shall have ensured that no act can break loose from the preferences and beliefs it is interpreted as manifesting, and that no account of autonomy that stresses independence that is more than contextual will be satisfied.
