S. LEWIS Tolkien, who shared Lewis’ love with mythology and fantasy, argued strongly that one did not have to link structure and belief organically, as Lewis did. Tolkien claimed that it was possible to absorb and accept the core meaning of the religious story itself while jettisoning the associated doctrines, which in any case were a human imposition on the divine.
