They will introduce more flexibility in learning time and encourage self-study. Time exerts great pressure on education. One of the major criticisms that traditional classroom pedagogy warrants is that it cannot easily accommodate differences in learning rates among pupils. The whole group has to proceed at the same average pace, too slow for fast learners but too fast for slow learners. Information technology can be used to assess the learning performance of pupils, to identify gaps in knowledge and to provide slow learners with additional learning time in the form of drill and practice exercises without the presence of the teacher.

An important aspect is the on-the-job training, which cannot be replaced by formal training, but the latter is an appreciated complement. The three main objectives with training are (1) maintain and improve knowledge and work skills, (2) accelerate the development of those with potential for advancement, and (3) assist those who move to new assignments which require training. 29 Apart from these basic objectives, training activities should help to foster corporate culture and a sense of Group identity, for which the Training Centre is an ideal place, also considering that 75% of the teaching is done by Nestle managers, specialists and trainers.

Removing educational inequalities is often hampered by limited availability of resources and may clash with the need for better-quality education. In recent years, there has been an increasingly insistent demand for a closer relationship between education and working life. It comes from various quarters in society: parents anxious to see their children equipped with modern skills adapted to a changing environment, employers increasingly aware of the strategic importance of a well-trained workforce to face competition, and students themselves perhaps more conscious today than a generation ago about the role of education in the shaping of their lives.
