Reflections of a week with an Ironman legend turned coach

Friday, January 19th, 2007

I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a good week with my coach and mentor Peter Reid.  It was time that worked for both our schedules; he needed to have an injury treated which I felt I could help him with, and I needed time to kick start training again.

Pete’s good friend and one of his PR Peak Performance coaches, Clint was a neat guy to meet.  He is full of enthusiasm and has passion in the purest form for the sport of triathlon and ironman racing.  This man’s mind is working 24-7, while he is a constant source of entertainment and knowledgable tidbits of information regarding just about anything.

I was most impressed by Peter and Clint’s intensity in managing the PR PEAK PERFORMANCE coaching business (www.peterreid.com).  My goodness, I’m not kidding that these two guys were working non-stop reading their athlete’s emails, and putting a great deal of time and energy into making up customized training plans.  They’d often have two-way discussions about their athletes, and work together to make up individualized plans for each and every one of them.  Pete was up at 6:30am every morning working on plans, while charting his athlete’s progress.

As an athlete who is coached by Peter, I’m most impressed by the attention he gives me.  He answers my emails notably quick, and is a constant source of insight and information in quality well beyond my expectations (who knew there was so much to learn).  I can’t say enough good things about his abilities as a coach, and certainly can’t do him justice by my ramblings.

I spoke with Guru today (www.gurubikes.com), I’m going to be riding a new carbon Crono this year.  They are amazingly quick in production from the time to design the bike (ie. they are fully customized) to the finished product,…leading about a 2 week turnaround.  Their reputation for service is outstanding, and well deserved.

I’m coaching a spin class tonight (every friday) from 6:30pm-8:30pm at SpeedTheory Calgary (www.speedtheory.ca) – starting to build the base back up.

swim/run

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Back in Calgary again — swam 90min with Dinos in AM, most the team is competing at the Canada West Championships,…so for them, it was an easy aerobic swim, working turns etc.  Perfect for getting back into the swing of things.

Ran 60min.

Calgary’s having a mild spell – loving it.
