Loving swimming

I had a great swim today.  Things are coming together well with a few tweaks in technique since the video analysis.  Today the assistant coach commented today that I ‘fit right in’.  This was an impactful statement as the 2 guys I was swimming with were both sub 16 minute 1500m kind of swimmers,…one guy has done a 15:51, and the other did a 15:42 this year.  This was the first practice with the Dinos that a) I finished the entire workout (6100m), and b) I kept myself from being lapped!  

300m swim, 8x50m kick on :60

300m pull, 4×100 swim on 1:45, 6kicks off wall 1-3, 4th = 10kicks underwater/fast

300m swim, 2×200 IM on 3:20

2x500m pull on 6:45

10x100m BAND ONLY on 1:30.  I did it!!!! was surprised and happy,….coming in on 1:25.

2x500m pull on 6:45

5x200m pull on 3:00

This morning, at the Dinos team swim practice I had an underwater video taken of my freestyle swim.  It was really good to see as there were a couple things that I THOUGHT I was doing right, but really wasn’t.  I learned that the front end of my stroke needs to start the catch earlier – as there is a dead spot in my stroke where I have both my arms extended (one behind, one ahead) without generating or maintaining momentum or speed.  I’m also dropping my lead arm’s shoulder at the end of the catch.  Further, my head’s too high (which drops my hips; for every 1 inch the head is raised, the hips are lowered by 3!), and my core is not stabilizing my body enough such that there is some side to side bending/sway in my body (or also called fishtailing).  I’ll be posting the video as soon as I get it transferred onto my computer, so you can heckle at free will.

Training update

Somewhat disappointed in my last few triathlon swims, and with the go ahead from Peter to work on my swimming more, I’ve been jumping in the pool with the big boys.  The Calgary Dinos swim program has 2 main groups,…two different levels — one that is super fast, and the other which is super duper fast.  I feel like the only way to swim fast is to train with the best,…right?  So I’ve been swimming with the super duper fast swimmers, and I think it’s paying off, as I’ve noticed a notable boost in my swim speed as of late.

My normal lane buddy, Jarrod who is Canada’s top open water swimmer (and Bejing Olympic hopeful) didn’t show up to practice this morning on account of a repetitive overuse shoulder strain (perhaps the 22km of swimming on friday added up with the other 10km he did Saturday morning).  So I had to settle swimming with another sub 16min 1500m swimmer, Willie D.

I felt great today,…every workout with the super duper fast group has a band-only component – and it’s starting to click with me.

400m swim on 6:30, 8×50 on :50 alternate back/free

2x200m IM on 3:15, 4×100 on 1:30

8×50 kick/swim with fins on :45, 400m swim with snorkel, and fins

2x[3x100m on 1:35, 10x50m with band-only with 3 on :50, 2 on:40]

3×400 descend on 5:40 for first, then last 2 on 5:20,…(my times were 5:05, 5:00, 4:50)
